Lake Balaton, Tihany in Hungary

While Hungary is no longer a secret, more and more people are starting to venture out of the main city of Budapest to explore. And why wouldn’t they? Hungary is home to some fantastic scenery, gorgeous and historical towns and cities and much more…

In fact, if you’re looking for hidden gems in Hungary, there is a lot to choose from.

As a Hungarian, I have taken it upon myself to explore my own country much more recently. And one of the best ways to get around is by

1. Székesfehérvár

A historical marvel, Székesfehérvár is a treasure chest of ancient architecture and regal history. Wander through the town’s cobblestone streets, adorned with impressive churches, palaces, and the splendid Bory Castle. It’s a great starting point for those who love history and architectural wonders.

Székesfehérvár’s history dates back over a millennium, as it was a coronation site for Hungarian kings and queens for centuries. The city’s architectural ensemble echoes this regal legacy.

2. Poroszló

For nature enthusiasts, Poroszló is an absolute paradise. Nestled by Lake Tisza, it offers an affordable getaway surrounded by stunning landscapes, birdwatching, and tranquil boat rides. This sanctuary is a haven for those seeking peace and closeness to nature.

Here you can also find plenty of places where they sell locally made and handcrafted charcuterie and cheese. If you are looking for a special treat, then make sure to visit Füzes Sajtműhely és Tejivó, where you can get a tasty meal or even some snacks to take home with you.

3. Szeged

Known as the “City of Sunshine,” Szeged exudes a vibrant atmosphere. Take a stroll through its elegant squares, relish the stunning architecture, and don’t miss the iconic Votive Church. Explore this city, known for its lively spirit and delightful student vibe.

Szeged mainly revolves around its university, which means that it is full of clubs, bars, cafés and a couple of unique places (for example, the Cat Café). You can experience life to its fullest in this city, as it will take you back to your youth when everything was a little simpler.

4. Pécs

Nestled in the southwest of Hungary, Pécs is a city that resonates with the essence of the Mediterranean. Known for its vibrant cultural scene, rich history, and a blend of diverse influences, the city boasts a rich heritage that includes the legacy of the Roman Empire, the influence of the Ottoman era, and the contributions of the early Christian community.

There are many attractions, including museums and historical sites, and they even offer affordable entry fees or free visits on certain days. The city hosts various festivals and events throughout the year, where visitors can immerse themselves in the local traditions and cultural celebrations. During these you can get a really good feel of Hungarian culture.

5. Kalocsa

Kalocsa proudly holds Hungary’s cultural traditions. Famous for its paprika, fruit, flax, hemp production and stunning embroidery, here you can delve into the traditions and folklore that define both the town and several others in Hungary. Experience the colorful festivals, intricate crafts, and the authentic rural Hungarian lifestyle that’s both intriguing and budget-friendly.

The main attraction is the Holy Trinity Square, which can be found right next to the Cathedral. If you’re interested in history, make sure to pay close attention to the pedestal, where the statues of St. John of Nepomuk, St. Sebastianus and St. Florian stand.

6. Tihany

Nestled on the idyllic Balaton Peninsula, Tihany is a must-visit for any traveler in Hungary. Visitors can relish the panoramas of Lake Balaton from quite a few vantage points, particularly from the iconic Tihany Abbey. It isn’t just some sight-seeing place though, it’s a Benedictine monastery founded in 1055. History geeks will highly appreciate it, as it’s an incredibly cultural and historical building that is a true wonder.

Tihany is also known for its preservation of Hungarian traditions. Here you can find craftsmen creating traditional crafts like pottery, weaving, and wood carving. If you’re willing to spend a little extra, this is the perfect place to find the memorabilia you can take home with you.

7. Eger

Eger is mainly famous for its wine. There are plenty of varieties and cellars that you can explore, however, if you want to make the best of your experience you need to visit Szépasszonyvölgy. It’s a fairly small area where you will find around 50 cellars. Here you can taste as much wine as you want, but be warned: you will need quite a bit of space in your luggage to take your favorites home.

There’s a 16th-century castle that is open to visitors, and the charming streets hold stories waiting to be discovered. If you decide to visit, you will see that there are historical marvels at every corner. The city’s biggest historical attraction is perhaps the tunnel system that reaches all across Eger. If you’re brave enough, take a tour where a guide will explain exactly what it was for and how people used it.

8. Sopron

Sopron, near the Austrian border, is a historic town boasting preserved medieval architecture. The Firewatch Tower is a wonderful sight to behold and is recommended for all visitors, although even a walk in the city can take you back to the middle ages. The streets are a testament to the town’s medieval past, with its cobblestone alleys lined with well-preserved buildings, charming squares, and grand churches.

The town is steeped in folklore and legends, which come to life through guided tours and storytelling sessions. You can learn about these mythical tales and see the city through the eyes of someone from centuries ago.

9. Szentendre

Szentendre, on the banks of the Danube, is an artsy town filled with galleries, museums, and charming streets. If you’re only planning to visit Hungary for a couple of days, it’s the perfect destination, as it’s only a short way from Budapest.

Here you can explore the artistic flair of the town, sample traditional Hungarian cuisine, and delve into its cultural heritage. The town is dotted with museums that present a varied tapestry of Hungarian culture. From the Hungarian Open Air Museum, which showcases rural life and folk architecture, to the Margit Kovács Ceramic Collection, visitors can explore the nation’s cultural heritage

10. Parád

Parád serves as a gateway to the breathtaking Mátra Mountains, offering an array of hiking trails, scenic viewpoints, and natural beauty. Travelers can explore the peaceful forests, cascading waterfalls, and meandering trails that reveal the tranquil beauty of the region. It’s the perfect place if you need a few quiet moments and some solitude.

Parád also has therapeutic thermal baths and wellness centers, allowing visitors to unwind and rejuvenate in natural hot spring waters. These facilities provide a perfect retreat, where travelers can relax in the healing waters amidst the stunning mountain backdrop.
